Backdrop Grayscale

Tailwind CSS version

v2.1+

Utilities for applying backdrop grayscale filters to an element.

Default class reference

Class
Properties
backdrop-grayscale-0—tw-backdrop-grayscale: grayscale(0);
backdrop-grayscale—tw-backdrop-grayscale: grayscale(1);

Usage

Use the backdrop-grayscale and backdrop-grayscale-0 utilities alongside the backdrop-filter utility to whether an element’s backdrop should be rendered as grayscale or in full color.

  1. <div class="backdrop-filter backdrop-grayscale ...">
  2. <!-- ... -->
  3. </div>

Responsive

To control an element’s backdrop grayscale filter at a specific breakpoint, add a {screen}: prefix to any existing backdrop grayscale utility. For example, use md:backdrop-grayscale-0 to apply the backdrop-grayscale-0 utility at only medium screen sizes and above.

  1. <div class="backdrop-filter backdrop-grayscale md:backdrop-grayscale-0 ...">
  2. <!-- ... -->
  3. </div>

Customizing

You can customize which backdrop-grayscale utilities are generated using the backdropGrayscale key in the theme section of your tailwind.config.js file.

  1. // tailwind.config.js
  2. module.exports = {
  3. theme: {
  4. + extend: {
  5. + backdropGrayscale: {
  6. + 50: '.5',
  7. + }
  8. + }
  9. }
  10. }

Learn more about customizing the default theme in the theme customization documentation.

Variants

By default, only responsive variants are generated for backdrop grayscale utilities.

You can control which variants are generated for the backdrop grayscale utilities by modifying the backdropGrayscale property in the variants section of your tailwind.config.js file.

For example, this config will also generate hover and focus variants:

  1. // tailwind.config.js
  2. module.exports = {
  3. variants: {
  4. extend: {
  5. // ...
  6. + backdropGrayscale: ['hover', 'focus'],
  7. }
  8. }
  9. }

Disabling

If you don’t plan to use the backdrop grayscale utilities in your project, you can disable them entirely by setting the backdropGrayscale property to false in the corePlugins section of your config file:

  1. // tailwind.config.js
  2. module.exports = {
  3. corePlugins: {
  4. // ...
  5. + backdropGrayscale: false,
  6. }
  7. }
