Where can I view the source code for the terraform modules?
See the following for important information pertaining to DC/OS Terraform:
Which cloud providers are available for use?
Currently we are supporting AWS, Azure and GCP.
See the list of available cloud providers.
What variables can I pass to the “convenience wrapper”?
For each of the Cloud Providers (AWS, GCP, Azure), you can find an extensive list of possible variables on the associated Terraform Registry page under “Inputs”.
How to set a HTTP proxy?
In enterprise environments, it is standard practice to funnel all http traffic through a http_proxy for security purposes. The Universal Installer supports http_proxy with the variables: dcos_use_proxy
dcos_http_proxy
dcos_https_proxy
dcos_no_proxy
These variables are available for you to add to your main.tf
. Please refer to the Advanced AWS, GCP, Azure pages for more details.
How to use multiple zones?
Multiple zones are supported by default on the Universal Installer for AWS and GCP. To pin your DC/OS cluster to a specific availability zone, you can input the availability_zones
variable in your main.tf
. If no availability zone is specified for AWS and GCP, the Universal Installer will request and deploy on all available zones. If high availability is a priority for your DC/OS cluster, configuring the availability_zones
variable is critical.
Changing or upgrading DC/OS versions
Terraform has been designed to handle configuration changes and version updates gracefully. It will determine what changes you are requesting and act accordingly.
If you would like to upgrade the version of DC/OS to a new one, simply modify the dcos_version
variable in your main.tf
to your desired version. Then simply issue a terraform apply
for the changes to take effect.
If you would like to change a DC/OS cluster configuration parameter, such as updating the resolvers, simply make the change to the desired configuration variable in your main.tf
. Issue a terraform apply
for the changes to be picked up by the installer. The provisioner will detect a change in the config and perform the changes as necessary.
Adding additional volumes
We support adding additionals EBS volumes to private agent instances with the private_agent_extra_volumes
variable. You can specify the size, type, iops and device name for each desired volume. See the following example for adding 2 additional volumes to a private agent:
private_agent_extra_volumes = [
{
size = "100"
type = "gp2"
iops = "3000"
device_name = "/dev/xvdi"
},
{
size = "1000"
type = "" # Use AWS default.
iops = "0" # Use AWS default.
device_name = "/dev/xvdj"
}
]
}
Error: not a valid region
Error: Error applying plan:
1 error(s) occurred:
* module.dcos.provider.aws: Not a valid region:
Terraform does not automatically rollback in the face of errors.
Instead, your Terraform state file has been partially updated with
any resources that successfully completed. Please address the error
above and apply again to incrementally change your infrastructure.
You have not properly assigned the default region to your AWS Provider. Terraform requires that you have the default region ENV set as a prerequisite.
Simply export the variable: See “AWS Provider” for more info.
export AWS_DEFAULT_REGION="us-east-1"
Or, as an alternative, you can also set the region variable to your desired region (${var.region}
).
Error: remote exec timeout
These modules use remote exec over ssh to handle installations and upgrades. You will need to ensure your key is authenticated to the ssh-agent. Add your private key to the ssh-agent:
ssh-add /your/private/key
Error: resource already exists
If you have previously lost state of a recent deployment or are attempting to reuse the same cluster_name
variable for another deployment, you will see a “duplicate resource” error:
*module.dcos.module.dcos-infrastructure.module.dcos-elb.module.dcos-elb-masters.module.masters.aws_elb.loadbalancer: 1 error(s) occurred:
* aws_elb.loadbalancer: DuplicateLoadBalancerName: Load Balancer named viktors-open-dcos-cluster-master already exists and it is configured with different parameters.
status code: 400, request id: 15897298-bdf0-11e8-a0c7-c5b9b43286ee
You will either need to remove the existing resources or change the cluster_name
of the current deployment to something different.
Error: unknown module referenced
The Universal Installer is designed for simplicity. If you run terraform init
and run into this error message of Error: output ____: reference to undefined module “____”
, it is likely that there are missing or conflicting files.
Make sure that there are no duplicate Terraform files and that there is one single main.tf
file in your folder. After you’ve verified this, run terraform init
. This will install all the modules needed to run the Universal Installer. No git clone
is required.
Error: validating provider credentials
If you run into a message about validating provider credentials or status code of 403, this likely culprit is improper configuration of your credentials. Please run through your credential setup again and check that they were set up correctly.
Error: Failed to obtain the IP address when installing Kubernetes
If you have spun up a DC/OS 1.12 or later cluster with the Universal Installer and reach this error message when installing Kubernetes:
EXIT with status 1: Failed to obtain the IP address for ‘ip_______.ec2.internal'; the DNS service may not be able to resolve it: Name or service not known
Please make sure that you are using RHEL or CentOS 7.5 as your instance OS. CoreOS is not currently a supported operating system for DC/OS. You can change the operating system of your DC/OS cluster by specifying the variable in dcos_instance_os
within your main.tf
.
For details around this requirement for running Kubernetes on DC/OS 1.12 or later, please refer to this support document.
Error: IAM instance profile creation
A deployment fails with the following example error even after you check the IAM console and you can see that the roles and policies have been deleted:
* module.dcos.module.dcos-infrastructure.module.dcos-iam.aws_iam_instance_profile.agent_profile: 1 error(s) occurred:
* aws_iam_instance_profile.agent_profile: Error creating IAM instance profile dcos-<CLUSTER_NAME>-instance_profile: EntityAlreadyExists: Instance Profile dcos-<CLUSTER_NAME>-instance_profile already exists.
status code: 409, request id: e3b2fe0b-4f05-11e9-b286-e78361536fef
* module.dcos.module.dcos-infrastructure.module.dcos-iam.aws_iam_instance_profile.master_profile: 1 error(s) occurred:
* aws_iam_instance_profile.master_profile: Error creating IAM instance profile dcos-<CLUSTER_NAME>-master_instance_profile: EntityAlreadyExists: Instance Profile dcos-<CLUSTER_NAME>-master_instance_profile already exists.
status code: 409, request id: e3aeb888-4f05-11e9-b9b4-758e0e14b43e
Even though you have deleted the associated roles/policies, you cannot view the “Instance Profiles” via IAM Console. You should issue the following commands via AWS CLI to remove the instance profiles:
aws iam delete-instance-profile --instance-profile-name dcos-<CLUSTER_NAME>-instance_profile
aws iam delete-instance-profile --instance-profile-name dcos-<CLUSTER_NAME>-master_instance_profile
Once these instance profiles are cleaned up, redeploying the cluster once more will resolve the issue.
Error: Server certificate with that name already exists.
When provisioning a cluster you may run into an error of “Error uploading server certificate, error: EntityAlreadyExists: The Server Certificate with name already exists.” This is likely due to a failed deployed before using the same cluster name. Issue the following to remove old and then re-apply with terraform.
aws iam delete-server-certificate --server-certificate-name <CLUSTER_NAME>-cert
aws iam delete-server-certificate --server-certificate-name int-<CLUSTER_NAME>-cert
aws iam delete-server-certificate --server-certificate-name ext-<CLUSTER_NAME>-cert
Error: Uploading server certificate
When your clock is not synced with an authoritative time server or not set equal to an authoritative time server provided value, you will get an error like this:
* aws_iam_server_certificate.selfsigned: Error uploading server certificate, error: MalformedCertificate: Unable to parse certificate. Please ensure the certificate is in PEM format.
Most likely, the server certificate being uploaded with terraform
has a datetime set in the future and the aws
API will reject it, sending this error. Please make sure that the clock on the machine you are provisioning your cluster from has the time in sync.
